Before you go
Is Ecuador safe to visit in 2026? A by-area guide
The country is not one risk. The two government pages draw the map.
In this chapter
The homepage strip carries the same US advisory this chapter uses. Level 2 is the country line. It is not a permission slip for every province.
US Level 2Exercise increased caution. Advisory issued October 14, 2025. The country page also showed a last-updated line of February 18, 2026.
UK: coastAgainst all but essential travel in seven coastal provinces. Airside transit at Guayaquil airport is the exception.
UK: borderAgainst all but essential travel within 20 km of Colombia, with four named exceptions in Carchi.
Where the US page says do not travel
The State Department’s Level 4 list, for terrorism and crime, is specific:
- Guayaquil south of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
- Huaquillas and Arenillas, in El Oro
- Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo, in Los Ríos
- Durán canton, in Guayas
- Esmeraldas city and everything north of it in Esmeraldas province, including the strip north to the Colombian border and east toward Carchi
On March 10, 2026 the US Embassy in Quito also restricted official travel by US government employees in Guayaquil’s Nueva Prosperina and Pascuales. That is a rule for the mission’s own staff. The public advisory is still the State Department page.
Where the US page says reconsider
Level 3 on that same advisory:
- Guayaquil north of Portete de Tarqui Avenue
- The rest of El Oro, outside Huaquillas and Arenillas
- The rest of Los Ríos, outside Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo
- Esmeraldas province south of the city
- The provinces of Sucumbíos, Manabí, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo
What the UK page adds
The FCDO page, still current on October 9, 2026 and updated October 2, advises against all but essential travel to Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. Airside transit inside Guayaquil airport is excluded.
It gives the same kind of warning for the zone within 20 kilometers of the Colombian border, except El Ángel Ecological Reserve, the Rumichaca crossing, the town of Tulcán, and the Pan-American Highway, all in Carchi. Lago Agrio, the town people use for Cuyabeno, sits inside that border zone.
The same page describes a 60-day state of emergency declared as of September 15 for security reasons in Guayas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro, Pichincha, Esmeraldas, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, plus the cantons of La Maná in Cotopaxi, Las Naves in Bolívar, and Camilo Ponce Enríquez in Azuay. It also records a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew, from September 17 to September 30, in El Oro, Guayas, Los Ríos, and Manabí. Those dates are on the page. They are not a promise about next month.
Pichincha, which includes Quito, is on that emergency list. It is not on the FCDO’s “all but essential” list.
The usual visitor route
Quito, Cuenca, the highland day trips, and the Galápagos are not named on the US Do Not Travel or Reconsider lists, and they are not the provinces in the UK coastal warning. That is not the same sentence as “nothing happens there.” The State Department says crime is widespread, including robbery and, in areas with transnational criminal groups, much worse violence. The FCDO says to take care in Quito’s old town and at transport hubs.
The coast is a different decision. Most of it sits inside one or both warnings. A highland route does not.
Read how you land in Quito and the entry rules for a US passport before you treat a Level 2 as a plan. The ten-day route stays in the highlands for that reason.
Is Quito safe?
Quito is not on the US do-not-travel list. The UK page does not advise against all but essential travel there. Both pages still describe ordinary city crime, and the old town is named. The neighborhood chapter is about how the city is organized, not a crime ranking. Neither government publishes one.
Are the Galápagos included?
No. The islands are absent from both area lists above. The FCDO’s separate warning is about boats: serious accidents have involved tour boats and smaller craft between islands, and some small boats skip basic safety. Use a reputable operator. The island-hopping guide is the practical version.
