The passport
Six months on the passport. Ninety days without a visa. Then the exceptions.
This is the tourist door, for a US passport. A longer stay is the visa chapter, and that chapter is an overview, not advice.
90 daysWithout a visa, inside any consecutive 12 months. A longer stay needs a visa approved before travel.
6 monthsPassport validity beyond the day you arrive, plus a blank page for the stamp.
No vaccine ruleState Department: none required for entry. The health ministry can still add one.
You enter at an official migration point. The Ministry of Government says a foreign passport must be valid and must have six months before it expires. The State Department adds one blank page per stamp, and says to carry a copy of the passport and the entry stamp while you are in the country.
US citizens born in Ecuador are a special case on the State Department page: they must show an Ecuadorian passport or national ID card on the way in and the way out.
The UK’s entry page, written for British passports, says officers may ask why you are traveling and for proof of a return or onward ticket, and that entry and exit are registered in the immigration database. Treat that as a question you might be asked, and confirm it if your own case is unusual.
An eSIM is the practical extra, not a requirement. The eSIM page is the booking version. The airport itself is Uber, taxi, or a private car.
The State Department’s entry rules:
Both lines point at Ecuadorian agencies for the detail. The dollar is already the currency, which the homepage strip also says.
The State Department line is short: no vaccinations are required to enter, and the Ministry of Health may request more.
The CDC’s Ecuador page, updated in its yellow-fever row on July 9, 2025, is more precise. It says the vaccine is required for travelers aged 1 to 60 who have lived more than 10 days in certain yellow-fever countries in South America, including Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia, and for arrivals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, including some long layovers. For a ordinary US departure, that is a different case.
The same CDC page recommends the vaccine for travelers 9 months and older going below 2,300 meters east of the Andes, in Morona-Santiago, Napo, Orellana, Pastaza, Sucumbíos, Tungurahua, and Zamora-Chinchipe. It says the vaccine is not recommended if the trip is only Quito, Guayaquil, the Galápagos, or land above 2,300 meters. The Amazon choice is where that sentence starts to matter. It is not medical advice. A travel clinic is.
A mainland stamp is not the island stamp. The park fee and the transit card are in the cost chapter. The UK entry page says tourists can stay in the islands up to 60 days, and lists a hotel booking or a host letter, a return flight to the mainland, the transit card, and travel health insurance for foreign tourists. The insurance line is the FCDO’s. Confirm it with the Consejo de Gobierno before you buy a policy on the strength of this paragraph.
The State Department says a US citizen child staying fewer than 90 days does not need the notarized consent letter that applies when one parent is absent. It says the letter does apply to dual Ecuadorian nationals, whatever the length of stay. If that is your family, read that section on the State Department page, not a summary.
