The city

Where to stay in Quito: neighborhoods compared

Six parts of one capital. The hotel is your problem. The neighborhood is the day.

  1. What not to decide from a map

Hotel links do not pay this site, so this page does not pretend to rank rooms. It compares neighborhoods. A booking site can show you a bed. The ride from the airport is UIO Transfers or the taxi and Uber comparison. The days out are the city and Mitad del Mundo tours.

Historic center

UNESCO since 1978. Plaza Grande, San Francisco, La Compañía, the basilica. Hills. The UK FCDO says mugging and pickpocketing are common in the old town, so a pretty balcony is not a security plan. Stay here to walk to the churches. Eat early. The Quito chapter is the loop.

La Mariscal

North of the old town, and where a lot of the newer restaurants and the nightlife sit. Convenient, and louder at night. Useful for a first stay if you want food within a few blocks and you do not need silence.

La Floresta

Residential, with the restaurant scene people mean when they say the city has a daily life. Calmer than La Mariscal, still central enough. A good default if the old town’s hills and the FCDO’s warning put you off sleeping there.

La Carolina

The big park, and the streets around it. North, modern, practical. This is the Quito of offices and a long green space, not of colonial stone. Day trips still leave from here. You will use a car or a taxi more than your feet.

Guápulo

The eastern edge, dropping into a gorge. It feels like a village glued to the city. Steep. Beautiful. A poor choice if you want flat walks after a flight. A good one if you want the view and you have already had your first quiet day.

Cumbayá

The valley east of the city. Warmer, newer, and a commute. The cities chapter says the same thing to people who might stay a year. For a week, choose it only if the hotel is the point and the old town is a planned outing.

What not to decide from a map

Neither the US advisory nor the UK page ranks these neighborhoods. The old town is the one a government page names. The rest of the comparison is how you will spend the day: walking, eating, or riding. The food chapter for Quito names kitchens. Where to stay names a few real hotels, still without prices. A ten-day route assumes you can leave the neighborhood for Cotopaxi without changing hotels every night.

Sources: neighborhood roles match the Quito and cities chapters of this guide. The old-town caution is the FCDO. UNESCO inscribed the historic center in 1978. No hotel rates are printed.
