This is a map of the doors, not a key. Ecuador’s Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana publishes the procedures. Applications run through its e-VISAS system. A consulate or a licensed immigration attorney can tell you whether your papers qualify. A website cannot.

A short tourist stay

Many nationalities, including the United States, can enter Ecuador without a visa for tourism. Official materials describe a tourist stay on the order of 90 days. How those days are counted, and whether an extension is open to you, is a matter of current migration rules. Confirm them before you travel, and do not plan a life on a tourist stamp.

The US Department of State’s Ecuador page is useful for American travelers. It does not replace Ecuadorian law.

Residence, in outline

Temporary residence, under the Organic Law of Human Mobility, is described as a two-year stay that may be renewed once. Categories include a pensioner route and a rentier route. The names on the official portal are:

The ministry’s pages set the income test at three unified basic salaries, the salario básico unificado. That wage is changed by the government, so the dollar figure moves. Dependents can require additional monthly income. Health insurance that covers you in Ecuador is part of the file. Documents issued abroad generally need an apostille or legalization.

Professional, work, and investor categories also exist. They are outside the scope of a travel guide.

What to do with this

If you are visiting, confirm the tourist rules and stop there. If you are choosing a city, do not sign a long lease until you know you can stay. If you are comparing insurers, the healthcare chapter is the companion, and it is not a policy recommendation.

Start at gob.ec. Bring the apostilles. Leave the Facebook comments where you found them.
