Nothing in the official pages read for this chapter says a resident of Ecuador must run a VPN. The reasons people turn one on are practical, and one of them cuts the other way.
The Federal Trade Commission’s current note on public hotspots, in cafés, airports, and hotels, says most websites now encrypt traffic, so the connection is usually safe. Look for the lock or “https” in the address bar. The same note warns that a fake site can show a lock too. A VPN is a separate product: it sends your traffic through a server the VPN company runs. It is not what the FTC lists as the check. The lock is.
Netflix says the shows and films you can stream change with the country you are in. It also says that connecting through a VPN can make the device look as if it is somewhere else, and that you may then see only titles Netflix licenses worldwide. Its help page tells people who want the local catalog to turn the VPN off. A VPN is a poor tool if the goal is “everything I had at home,” because Netflix describes the opposite result.
This guide did not find a rule that a US bank requires a VPN from Ecuador. Fraud checks can question a login that appears far from the account’s usual places. Whether a VPN helps or hurts is that bank’s decision. The banking chapter is about cards and fees. The bank’s own help page is about logins.
