The Oriente
A flooded forest and a great river. You go with a guide, and you stay.
East of the Andes, Ecuador drops into the Amazon basin. Ecuadorians call it the Oriente. It is a small slice of the forest and one of the most biodiverse places on the continent. It is also oil country. Both facts belong in the same paragraph.
Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, reached via Lago Agrio, is a system of blackwater lagoons. Canoes, caimans, monkeys, and river dolphins are the usual rhythm. Trips are sold as a few nights. That is the right unit. A day trip is a boat ride with a slogan.
Yasuní National Park, reached via Coca on the Napo, is larger and wilder, and it sits on top of petroleum reserves that have been argued over for years. Lodges and community-run camps take visitors in by boat. You do not wander off the program. The forest is not a trail system.
The established model on the Napo is a lodge: rooms or cabins, a naturalist, dawn outings, and a return to a dining room. Sacha Lodge and the Napo Wildlife Center are two long-running examples of that model. Names are not availability. Ask what is operating when you plan to go.
Tena, closer to the mountains, is the town for a shorter stay and for rafting on the upper Napo. It is jungle-edge, not deep forest. Baños is where many people sleep the night before the road east.
See a travel clinic. Yellow fever vaccination is commonly recommended for the Oriente, and malaria risk is not zero in parts of the lowlands. This is not medical advice. The CDC’s Ecuador page is the place to start, along with your own doctor.
Hire guides. Respect the communities whose land this is: Kichwa, Waorani, and others, depending on the river. The wildlife is the reason to come. The reason to leave no trace is the same.
