Money

The cost of living in Ecuador

Cheaper than a large American city is not the same as cheap. Here is the distinction.

  1. Where the money stretches
  2. Where it does not
  3. Help in the house
  4. A sane comparison

Ecuador has used the US dollar since 2000. There is no exchange rate to manage, and an American debit card is not a foreign object. That convenience is why people overestimate how far a dollar goes.

Where the money stretches

Local food, a market lunch, domestic bus travel, and many services cost less than they do in a large US city. Produce at a town market is the daily economy. A set lunch, the almuerzo, is how the country eats at midday. The food chapter describes it. We are not going to invent a monthly grocery total. It depends on whether you cook, where you live, and how attached you are to imported brands.

Housing is the other large variable. A furnished apartment in Cuenca or a quieter valley town is a different number from a modern flat in northern Quito or anything in the Galápagos. Read renting before you trust a forum average.

Where it does not

Cars, electronics, wine, and many medicines are imported and taxed. A vehicle is not a bargain. Neither is outfitting a kitchen with brands you recognize from home. The Galápagos are a national park supplied by plane and boat. They are the expensive chapter, even for Ecuadorians.

Dining out can be modest or it can look like any capital. The mistake is averaging those into one lifestyle.

Help in the house

Some foreign residents hire household help. That is a real labor market, with a minimum wage, social security through IESS, and a contract. It is not a perk that sits outside the law. If you go this way, learn the obligations before you agree a cash amount.

A sane comparison

Compare Ecuador with the city you would actually leave, not with a rumor. Cuenca and a few smaller towns are where retirees usually find the balance they came for. Quito costs more and offers more. The coast varies with the town. None of them will match a spreadsheet you found in a Facebook group in 2014.

For moving dollars in, the banking chapter is the practical one. Keep a US account. Open a local one only once you have the residency papers a bank will accept.

Plan your trip

Moving money, not a budget

A short, practical list. Nothing here is required.
